1. Know the Signs of Heatstroke
Heatstroke can develop quickly, especially on hot and humid days. Excessive panting, drooling, vomiting, weakness, or collapse are all warning signs that require immediate veterinary attention. If you think your pet may be suffering from heatstroke, move them somewhere cool and seek veterinary care as soon as possible.
2. Make Beach Days Safe
The beach is a favourite summer destination for many dogs, but there are a few risks owners should be aware of before hitting the sand.
While at the beach, keep an eye out for excessive thirst or dehydration, lethargy after exercise, vomiting after drinking salt water, diarrhoea, and signs of overheating from too much sun and activity.
Pack plenty of fresh water, head to the beach outside peak heat periods, provide access to shade, and encourage regular rest breaks throughout the day. If your pet seems unusually tired or unwell after a beach trip, it's worth seeking veterinary advice.
3. Watch Those Paws
Hot pavements, roads, and even sand can cause painful burns. A good rule of thumb, if it's too hot for the back of your hand, it's too hot for your pet's paws. Consider walking early in the morning or later in the evening when surfaces have cooled down.
While prevention is always best, emergencies can still happen. That's why the team at Animal Emergency Centre Gold Coast is here 24/7 to provide emergency and critical care when pets need it most.
We're proud to be attending Paws at the Park as a Gold Sponsor alongside our friends at Greencross Vets and Petbarn. As a team that has been part of the Gold Coast community for more than 30 years, we love opportunities like Paws at the Park to get out from behind the hospital doors, connect with local pet owners, and celebrate what makes our region such a wonderful place for pets and their people. Come say hello to our team and chat with us about keeping your pets safe, healthy, and happy all summer long!
